Shenise Johnson named ACC Player of the Week
Jan. 3, 2011
GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Miami junior guard Shenise Johnson earned this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honor as announced by the conference office on Monday, the second straight week and third time this season a Hurricane has earned the honor.
It is the first time this season and the third time in her career that Johnson has been named the ACC Player of the Week. Teammate Riquna Williams was awarded the honor last week and on Dec. 13.
Johnson may have had the best week of her collegiate career. In back-to-back wins over Morgan State and Lipscomb, the junior guard matched a career-best with 11 made field goals – scoring 22 and 25 points respectively. She also grabbed 10 boards apiece in those games, recording her fifth and sixth double-doubles of the season – most in the ACC among guards.
The Henrietta, N.Y. native was also named the Miami Holiday Classic MVP after convincing wins over George Washington and Morgan State. In all, Johnson sported a 2/1 assist to turnover ratio, grabbed 26 rebounds, had her hand in on 14 steals and five blocks, shot 60 percent from the field and scored an average of 22 points per game.
Johnson is the only player in the ACC to rank in the Top 10 in points (4th, 18.3 ppg), rebounds (6th, 8.3 rpg) and assists (t-7th, 3.6 apg).
The ACC’s weekly accolades are voted on by the league’s “Blue Ribbon Panel,” which consists of national and local media members, as well as school representatives. The panelists will also vote on the league’s postseason All-Conference teams for the 2010-11 season.
Miami is 14-1 on the season, tied for the best start to a season after 15 games in program history. The Hurricanes open their ACC schedule on Thursday when they travel to Charlottesville, Va. to take on Virginia.
