Miami to Face Rival Florida State in ACC Opener

Miami to Face Rival Florida State in ACC Opener

Sept. 24, 2010

CORAL GABLES, Fla. –

The University of Miami women’s soccer team will open its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule on Sunday when it plays host to its arch-rival, 13th-ranked Florida State at 12 p.m. at Cobb Stadium.

The Hurricanes (6-2-1) are riding a four-match win streak and seem to be peaking at just the right time.

The `Canes will rely on its always solid defense – led by Brittney Macdonald and Vikki Alonzo’s 0.75 goals against average – to help upend the Seminoles. However, the Hurricane offense has been a driving force to UM’s early success.

After only nine games, Miami has tallied 19 goals from 10 different scorers – led by Brittney Steinbruch’s five. A season ago, UM was only able to score 20 goals in 19 contests.

Looking to get in the way of the Hurricanes’ terrific start will be the Seminoles (5-2-0).  Led by senior Janice Cayman’s four goals, Florida State has racked-up 49 points, while its defense has allowed only six goals on the year.

Last season, FSU advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals and defeated the `Canes in Tallahassee, Fla. in their regular season matchup. In that contest, Miami’s Julianne Rickers scored a late first-half goal in the 4-1 defeat.

A win on Sunday for Miami would be the first against its in-state foe since 1999.

Fans in attendance will have the chance to win several prizes, including a team autographed poster and soccer ball as well as one of many Miami Soccer t-shirts. Tickets can be purchased for $3 for children and $5 for adults at the Cobb Stadium gate one hour prior to kick-off. University of Miami students receive free admission with their `Cane Card.

For those fans following Miami women’s soccer on facebook and twitter, a trivia question will be posted the morning of the match. Listen to the public address announcer’s prompt and if you are among the first three with the correct answer, you will win a prize.

Sunday will also mark the first soccer game that HurricaneSports.com will feature a live gameday chat for fans to follow at home or in the office. To participate in the in-game chat below, return to this page 30-minutes prior to kick-off. Live stats will also be available at HurricaneSports.com.
