The University of Miami women’s soccer team dominated the Fordham Rams en route to a 3-1 victory Friday night in Cobb Stadium for the ‘Canes fourth straight win.

“Our composure and ability to calm the game down was the difference tonight,” head coach Tricia Taliaferro said. “Fortunately we were able to get a couple goals to get us started.”

Miami (6-2-1) trailed 1-0 before scoring two goals in less than two minutes, ending Fordham’s hopes for an upset bid.

The ‘Canes go-ahead goal came after they were awarded a corner kick taken by senior Katie Oddo. The service to the far post was headed in by the 5-10 Brittney Macdonald to put the ‘Canes ahead for good.

The Hurricanes’ first goal came off the foot of Blake Stockton, who took a pass from Jordan Roseboro and hit it off the bottom of the cross bar before it crossed the goal line, tying the contest in the 30th minute.

Both first half goals for UM were the second of the season for Stockton and Macdonald.

It was more of the same in the second period as Miami belted 11 more shots against the Ram defense, with the final goal of the night coming on an outstanding individual effort from senior Brittney Steinbruch.

In the 53rd minute, the Hurricane’s all-time leading goal scorer battled her way through five defenders, before her sliding toe-touch beat the charging keeper into the right side of the net.

The goal was the fifth of the season for the Wyckoff, N.J. native and the 33rd of her career. With her next point, Steinbruch would tie Britney Butcher (2001-04) as the program’s all-time point scorer with 73.

The lone Fordham (3-5-0) goal came in the fifth minute as Katie McDermott scored on a header off a corner kick.

Prior to the season, the Hurricanes teamed-up with UM alum Kristen Kenney’s MALAIKA FOR LIFE organization in Scoring Goals to Save Lives. The premise of the initiative sees the soccer program donate $10 to the charity for every goal scored throughout the season. The three goals from the ‘Canes increased this season’s total to $190.

Last season, Miami scored only 20 goals over 19 games. After only nine games this season the offense has been more consistent and UM has tallied 19 from 10 different goal scorers.

Miami’s next match is their conference-opener and comes against their arch-rival, No. 14 Florida State. Kick-off is set for 12 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 26 at Cobb Stadium.

“Not long,” was Steinbruch’s response when asked about how long the team will celebrate its early season success. “We have a long week of practice to get ready for Florida State and its going to be serious.”
