Another Two-A-Day in the Books for the `Canes

Another Two-A-Day in the Books for the `Canes

Aug. 16, 2010

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami completed its second two-a-day of fall camp on Monday, holding its second two-hour session on the Greentree Practice Fields in the late afternoon hours. Working under slightly cooler conditions than the early morning session, the `Canes continued to stress red zone and third down situations with the season-opener just weeks away now.

Chambers Switching Sides

Junior Lee Chambers has a new home. On Monday, the former running back ran out onto the practice fields in a white uniform to stretch with Lovett’s defense. Chambers, who has 272 yards rushing in 14 career games at UM, makes a similar move to the secondary that former teammate Sam Shields did a season ago. He began working with defensive backs coach Wesley McGriff on technique and assignments, often taking plays off to stand alongside McGriff and listen in as he coached up his secondary.

Whipple Excites the Offense

Junior quarterback Spencer Whipple may have provided the most exciting moments of the day, connecting on back-to-back deep passes to Storm Johnson and Aldarius Johnson in 11-on-11 blitz drills. Whipple’s first pass to Storm went up the middle for a 70-yard touchdown after a big block downfield by Billy Sanders. That was immediately followed up by a spectacular 40-45 yard throw-and-catch to Aldarius, exciting the other offensive players as they watched on.

Defensive Highlights

– McCarthy also provided what would have been a highlight tackle in a game situation on a passing play cross the middle.

Jeremy Lewis, Andrew Smith, Olivier Vernon and Allen Bailey all had big afternoons on the D-line. Lewis had a QB hurry and a tackle for loss, Vernon had a pair of QB hurries, while Smith and Bailey each had a sack and a QB hurry.
