CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami women’s basketball team will host in-state foe Florida Gulf Coast in the opening round of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament on Thursday, March 18 at 7 p.m. at the BankUnited Center.

“We are so excited to not only be in the postseason, but also to be recognized as a team worthy of being a host,” said head coach Katie Meier. “This is a credit to my team, staff and our administration.”

The Hurricanes (17-13) are making their first postseason appearance since the 2005-06 season. It marks the 11th postseason and fifth WNIT appearance in program history. In Miami’s last postseason appearance, the `Canes advanced to the second round of the 2006 WNIT after defeating FIU, 95-83, at the BankUnited Center.

With a win in this year’s tournament, Miami would advance to the second round to take on the winner of the Florida and USF match-up.

The 2009-10 Hurricanes finished the regular season in a three-way tie for 10th place in the ACC with a 4-12 conference mark. They are led by sophomores Shenise Johnson and Riquna Williams. Johnson became just the second player in program history to be named First Team All-ACC while Williams earned Second Team All-ACC accolades.

Florida Gulf Coast (24-6) not only secured its seventh 21-plus win season in the eight-year program history, but it claimed its third consecutive automatic bid to the WNIT.
