CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami head football coach Al Golden attended his first official Hurricanes’ practice Saturday morning at the Greentree Practice Fields. Golden, who was joined by assistants Mark D’Onofrio (defensive coordinator), Jethro Franklin (defensive line) and Paul Williams (defensive backs), observed from the sidelines as interim head coach Jeff Stoutland ran the session.
The team spent about two hours practicing under cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid-70’s.
With just three practices remaining in Coral Gables before the team breaks for the holidays, Stoutland likes the energy and enthusiasm from the guys.
“Every day is a new day,” Stoutland said. “The one thing I am learning is that every day there is a new energy and a passion for football. It was a great practice today – a lot of competitiveness…guys were getting after it.”
For the first time in bowl prep, the `Canes went with live tackling for the majority of the session, simulating game-like conditions in every team drill.
“It was great speed, great tempo and a lot of enthusiasm,” Stoutland said. “Guys were competing with each other. It was fun.”
Some practice highlights included a big block by Tommy Streeter on a Kendal Thompkins catch and run, a long catch downfield by LaRon Byrd in double coverage and a jarring tackle by James Gaines down the left sideline.
The `Canes will return to practice Sunday morning.
