Miami Falls at No. 21 Nebraska, 99-85

LINCOLN, Neb. – The University of Miami women’s basketball team fell to No. 21 Nebraska 99-85 at the Devaney Sports Center in front of 4,333 spectators.

The Hurricanes got a strong effort from junior guards Riquna Williams and Shenise Johnson , who led the team with 28 and 26 points respectively.

However, the `Canes couldn’t overcome Nebraska’s strong shooting performance. The Huskers shot 63.6 percent from the field – 72.7 percent in the second half – and hit eight of 14 three pointers on the night.

Four players scored in double-figures for last season’s No. 1 NCAA Tournament team, with Jordan Hooper, Lindsey Moore and Dominique Kelley scoring at least 22 points each. Catheryn Redmon recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Miami’s defense forced 26 Nebraska turnovers, but the home team fed off the crowd and took advantage of the opportunities when they were there.

Johnson led all scorers at the break with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting. The Henrietta, N.Y. native led all Miami players with seven rebounds on the night.

Even with the obvious size disadvantage the `Canes put up a fight on the glass grabbing 34 boards to the Huskers’ 39. Seventeen of Miami’s rebounds came on the offensive end.

The Hurricanes next play host to their namesake, Miami (Ohio) this Saturday at 12 p.m. at the BankUnited Center.

Junior guard Riquna Williams finished the game with two three-pointers. Last season the Pahokee, Fla. native hit 106 treys – the most in school history and the second-most in the history of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
