Miami Falls to No. 3 Maryland in Season Finale

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team fell short in its comeback bid against No. 3 Maryland Sunday afternoon, as the Terrapins won 2-1 at Ludwig Field.
With the scored knotted at 1-1, Maryland’s Lydia Hastings scored the game-winner in the 76th minute from 10 yards out. The shot appeared to be stopped before crossing the line by Miami forward Brittney Steinbruch, but after a delayed call by the official, the Terps were awarded the controversial goal.
“We played our best soccer in program history this weekend and it is hard to swallow losing both on judgment calls,” said head coach Tricia Taliaferro.
Miami (10-8-1, 4-6-0 ACC) trailed 1-0 at the half after giving up an early fourth-minute goal to the Terrapins’ Danielle Hubka. However, just over three minutes into the second period freshman Tara Schwitter took advantage of a miscue from the home team.
The Oradell, N.J. native collected a misplay in the Maryland end and finished her shot into the right side, just under the cross bar.
Maryland ends its regular season with a 15-2-1 record, 7-2-1 inside the conference.
The Miami loss along with Virginia Tech’s 4-0 win over NC State means the `Canes end the regular season ninth in the conference, narrowly missing out on an invite to the ACC Tournament.
The ACC has proven to be the nation’s top women’s soccer conference as it currently has seven teams ranked in the Top 25 and four in the Top 10. Boston College and North Carolina each have held the No. 1 ranking during the season.
“We deserve to be in the NCAA tournament and I hope that the quality of our team and conference will be recognized with an at-large bid next Monday,” added Taliaferro.
