CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. –

The University of Miami women’s soccer team fell 1-0 in highly-contested, double overtime match at No. 11 Boston College Thursday evening at Newton Soccer Field.

Boston College (12-4-1, 5-4-0 ACC) scored the golden goal just one minute into the second overtime period. Hannah Cerrone was awarded a penalty kick after drawing a Miami foul in the box. Cerrone’s shot was saved by Vikki Alonzo, but on the rebound the Eagles’ Amy Caldwell headed in the game-winner.

“For the game to be ended in that matter rips my heart out,” said head coach Tricia Taliaferro. “The team played at another level and continued to improve as the game continued. I am so proud of our performance and professionalism.”

Alonzo played one of the finest games of her career as she tied a season-high with nine saves on the evening.

The Hurricanes’ offense came alive at the end of regulation as it fired off five of its eight shots in the final 10 minutes, but they were unable to find the back of the net.

Boston College, led by the conference’s second leading scorer Victoria DiMartino, was held in check for over 100 minutes.

Coming into the match, both teams held an even 4-4 conference record and had yet to clinch a berth into the ACC Tournament. With the win, Boston College secured its spot in the postseason while the Hurricanes’ fate has yet to be determined.

Miami (10-7-1, 4-5-0 ACC) will close out its regular season at No. 3 Maryland on Sunday. The ‘Canes will lock-up the eight seed in the ACC Tournament with a win or a tie or a Virginia Tech loss or tie against NC State.

The ACC has proven to be the nation’s top women’s soccer conference as it currently has seven teams ranked in the Top 25 and four in the Top 10. Boston College and North Carolina each have held the No. 1 ranking during the season.
