The University of Miami women’s soccer team couldn’t overcome two first half goals by Wake Forest, falling to the No. 22 Demon Deacons 3-1 at Cobb Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Wake Forest scored twice before the break with goals in the 34th and 42nd minutes.

The first goal came off the foot of Katie Stengel, who while battling for the ball with a Miami defender, chipped the ball high over the head of the charging Vikki Alonzo. Eight minutes later, after a flurry in the box, Jordan Feger found Bianca D’Agostino for the point-blank score.

Miami had its opportunities, but was just unable to find the back of the net until late in the second half – when Brittney Macdonald headed in a corner kick taken by Lauren Singer in the 86th minute.

“I thought we worked hard, things just didn’t go our way today, but we also gave them some opportunities” said Macdonald.

Wake Forest scored their third goal in the 77th minute, when Stengel netted her second of the game on an assist from Bianca D’Agostino.

The `Canes outshot the Demon Deacons on the day 17-14, including 11 shots in the second half, but only five found their way on goal.

“I thought Wake Forest did a good job as far as coming in and breaking the rhythm of the game, being able to get a couple goals early against the momentum,” said head coach Tricia Taliaferro. “We will learn from this and get better. Its still early in the ACC schedule so we will get prepared and be ready for NC State.”

Miami will head to Raleigh to take on the Wolfpack on Thursday, Oct. 14. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
