Miami Men's Tennis Wraps Up Day Two at UM Invitational

CORAL GABLES, FLA. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team collected eight wins during day two of the UM Invitational, which featured four singles sessions. Breaking out for the Hurricanes were three newcomers to the team.
Freshman Gabriel Flores started the day off with a 6-0. 6-1 victory over Derek Madon of Florida Atlantic. The win gave Flores’ a team high five singles wins on the year with only two losses.
Senior Eduardo Pavia, who won all three of his singles and doubles matches in Friday’s opening day, defeated Ervin Garibovic 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, and followed that up with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Florida State’s Anderson Reed to improve to 3-0 in singles at the UM Invitational, all without dropping a set.
Freshman Omar Aly played his first match in the second session, defeating Jorge Suarez of USF, 7-5, 6-3, his second singles win of the UM Invitational, then followed that up with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Nicholas Spinazze of Arkansas, leaving Aly and Pavia as two of only six players left who have not lost a singles match heading into the third day of tournament play.
The returning veterans also held their own on Day Two, with senior Waylon Chin defeating Arkansas’ Gergoire Lehman, 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 10-5, and junior Santiago Nieto beating Arkansas’ Mike Nott, 6-3, 6-1 in the morning sessions.
In the afternoon session, senior Carl Sundberg beat USF’s Yanick Yoshizawa 7-5, 6-3 for his second singles win of the tournament, and Nieto beat Sebastian Hagn of USF 2-6, 6-4, 10-6.
The UM Invitational wraps up tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 10 with two sessions of singles and one doubles session. Singles play begins at 9am, doubles is set to start no earlier than noon.
