Miami travels to Kentucky for Greater Louisville Classic

Oct. 1, 2010

CORAL GABLES, Fla. –

The University of Miami cross country team is set compete in the 9th Annual  Greater Louisville Classic at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. Saturday morning.

The race is billed as the “South’s Largest Collegiate Cross Country Meet” and will feature 97 schools from 20 states and over 2,000 competitors. The race will be the largest the Hurricanes will compete in this season and it also marks the first time Miami will compete outside the state of Florida this fall.

The men will be running on an 8K course with the gun set to go off at 9:30 a.m. The women will face a 5K track beginning at 10:15 a.m.

Miami’s first two races have been very successful as a strong contingent of freshmen have led the way for both the men’s and women’s teams.

Freshman Brooke Dovell – the individual champion in the season-opening King of the Hill Challenge – was again the top-performer for Miami in the University of Florida’s Mountain Dew Invitational on Sept. 18. The Erial, N.J. native finished 10th overall and led her team to a sixth-place finish.

For the men, the No. 1 spot belongs to freshman Connor Adams. He has two Top 15 finishes so far this season, placing 14th overall in his first ever 8K race in Gainesville, Fla.

“Both teams have a great chance to continue their success against a strong field,” said Griffiths. “Saturday’s race will feature several teams ranked in the south region.”

Joining Adams in Louisville will be fellow freshmen Michael Coogan, Luke Fontaine, Sean Pezzulo and Phil Wood. Veterans Greg Kaczka and Charles Michel will also be competing.

The women will have more experience on the course as seniors Katharine Woodard, Emma Steppe and Caitlin Knapp will be joined by Dovell, Lindsi Arrington, Anna Bona, Allison Ludwick.
