Hurricanes to Face Clemson in ACC Matchup
Sept. 29, 2010
CORAL GABLES, Fla. –
The University of Miami women’s soccer team is will look for its first Atlantic Coast Conference win of the season when it faces Clemson on the road this Friday at 3 p.m. at Riggs Field.
The Hurricanes (6-3-1, 0-1-0 ACC) will be on the road for the first time since Sept. 5 and will be facing a Tigers squad that has yet to score a goal in its first two Atlantic Coast Conference matches – losses to NC State and Wake Forest.
Miami will need to capitalize on its scoring opportunities to pick-up its first league win of 2010. Against Florida State on Sunday, the `Canes pressured the Seminole defense – especially in the second half – but were unable to put the ball in the back of the net.
However, compared to last season, the Hurricane offense has been on a roll. After only 10 games, Miami has tallied 19 goals from 10 different scorers – led by Brittney Steinbruch’s five. A season ago, UM was only able to score 20 goals in 19 contests.
With her next point, Steinbruch will tie Britney Butcher (2001-04) as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 73 points.
The last time UM played at Riggs Field in 2008, then freshman Julianne Rickers scored the game-winning goal in double overtime. That season, Miami would go on to reach their second-straight NCAA Tournament.
The Tigers (5-5-0, 0-2-0 ACC) have dropped five consecutive contests, with their last victory coming on Sept. 5 against North Florida. Offensively for Clemson, Maddy Elder comes in with a team-leading five goals. She also has a team-best three assists on the season.
