Sept. 14, 2010

HANAHAN, S.C. – Senior Maria Ronderos shot one over-par 73 and the University of Miami women’s golf team posted its best score of the three-day tournament to finish up play at the Cougar Classic hosted by the College of Charleston at Yeamans Hall Tuesday.

“I think the girls played great today,” UM head women’s golf coach Patti Rizzio said. “They improved everyday as the tournament went on. I think they’re only going to get better and better as the year goes on. Their attitudes are wonderful, and they’ve been a joy to work with.”

North Carolina took the team title recording a 4-under par 860 for the tournament. Ole Miss (584) placed second followed by Oklahoma (584), South Carolina and Florida (585) to round out the top five. Miami placed 19th after saving its best for the final day. The `Canes shot 15-over par 303 – its best round of the tournament.

Ronderos continued her strong play Tuesday. After shooting even-par 72 on Monday in the second round, she birdied four times on the front nine to go one-under par 35 before registering a two-over par 38 on the last nine holes. The four birdies was a career-best for Ronderos as she finished tied for 29th.

Freshman Carina Cuculiza followed Ronderos’ lead as she shot two-over par 74 in the final round. She too birded four times and was two-under par 34 on the front nine before shooting four-over on the backside.

Senior Christina Hirano also saved her best score for the last day as she finished four-over 76 while sophomore Melanie Kleiner posted an eight-over par 80 in round three. Hirano recorded birdie on hole 3 and made par 13 times. Kleiner also made birdie on hole 3 and made par 10 times.
