Head Coach Katie Meier's Fantasy Camp Inside Look

In anticipation for the Miami Hurricanes Fantasy Camp on October 20, 2010, HurricaneSports.com is bringing you an inside look at the women’s basketball program. Stay tuned to each week for basketball tips from the coaches, support staff and student-athletes.
This week HurricaneSports.com sat down with Katie Meier to get an inside look at recruiting from the Head Coach’s desk.
Coming off the 2010 Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) postseason run and a 22 win season, Meier exudes excitement about the upcoming season and her talented young team. Hurricanesports.com asked Meier what describes her energized program, and how she and her staff determine what recruits are right for the U.
“The three words that describe my program are Family, Intensity and Dynamic; family may not be an adjective but it defines what this program is about,” said Meier. “When I recruit a player, first and foremost they have to display a love of the game and a respect for education. I look for players who get what it is to be a Hurricane and understand that around here we are not average, we are all about greatness.”
Recruiting in basketball is crucial and in Meier’s eyes successful UM recruits, “have to relish in accountability. Miami is a very hands-on institution, from the classroom, to the study halls, to the tutoring and our individual basketball workouts. Everything we do is small groups and all about individual improvement. You cannot hide from greatness here.”
Meier is recruiting a new group of basketball enthusiasts. Instead of seeking high school hoops stars, Meier is looking for adults 21 and over to join her staff and team for Fantasy Camp.
“Campers will get a very hands on experience, they will be taught moves and concepts by our players in order to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the skills required to play the game at the highest level. Participants can also expect to laugh a lot and feel proud about the young ladies that represent the University of Miami,” said Meier.
