Miami Heads to Midwest to Face Purdue

Aug. 26, 2010

CORAL GABLES –

The University of Miami women’s soccer team will end its season-opening three game road trip with a visit to West LaFayette, Ind. to take on the Purdue Boilermakers (1-1-0, 0-0 Big Ten), Friday at the Varsity Soccer Complex at 5:30.

Both the ‘Canes (1-1-0, 0-0 ACC) and the Boilermakers opened the season with tough one goal losses, but both rebounded with blowout wins over their second opponent.

Miami downed Stetson 6-0 last Sunday, while Purdue handled Morehead State 4-0 later that same day.

“Purdue will be a good team and a big challenge for us on the road,” said head coach Tricia Taliaferro. “Rob (Klatte) always has an organized athletic team that plays with purpose.”

The Boilermakers, tabbed to finish fifth in the deep and talented Big Ten and ranked 31st in Top Drawer Soccer’s Top-64 to open the season, has been led in the young season by Marta Lynch (two goals) and Kellie Phillips (goal, assist).

For Miami, senior Brittney Steinbruch is just one goal shy of becoming the program’s most prolific goal scorer as she is currently tied with former UM great Britney Butcher (2001-04) at 29 career goals.

Freshman Blake Stockton currently leads the ‘Canes with three points after scoring UM’s lone goal against the 11th-ranked Gators and assisting on Steinbruch’s game-winner over Stetson.

Of the seven goals scored so far this season for Coach Taliaferro’s young squad, each has come from a different player.

The Hurricanes’ defense – led by Brittney Macdonald, helped Vikki Alonzo extend her career shutout record to 18 in the win over Stetson.

These two teams have only met once previously, in 2008. Purdue traveled to Coral Gables and Miami came away with a 2-0 victory. Both goals were scored by Steinbruch and Alonzo recorded the shutout.
