Meet Women's Soccer Freshman Tara Schwitter

Aug. 24, 2010

In the last edition of a four-part series, freshman Tara Schwitter sat down with HurricaneSports.com to tell ‘Canes fans what its like to be a new member of the Miami Hurricane Family.

Why did you choose Miami over the other school’s that recruited you?

I chose Miami over the other schools that recruited me because Miami plays in the ACC, the best women’s soccer conference in the country and because of its great academic reputation. I loved the girls on the team, the coaches and the location of the school when I came to visit.

What are some of the goals that you have for yourself and as a team this season?

My main personal goal for this season is to contribute everything I can to the team and my goal for the team is to win a national championship.

After being in Miami for a little while now, what do think of the city? Any surprises?

Since our campus isn’t exactly in Miami we haven’t experienced the city all that much yet. We have, however, been to South Beach twice, and that is an interesting place to say the least.

Of the veteran players on the team, who do you look up to or who has been most helpful to you so far in making the transition to college?

It’s hard to choose one particular veteran player who has been the most helpful because all the upperclassmen have been extremely welcoming to the four freshmen. Starting from day one they have made me feel comfortable and part of the team.

Who was the first teammate you met and what was your first impression of them?

The first teammate I met was Lauren Singer. When we first met she was very low key so I figured when I got to school she was still going to be quiet. Little did I know the other side of Singer!

Is there something interesting about you that not many people in Miami know?

I am the fourth child in a family of five kids, which is great because hopefully we’ll have that much more UM representation in the stands at our games.

Have you seen an celebrities since you have been in Miami?

Going to school around Miami it is kind of expected that you will see a celebrity here and there. So far not only have I seen Willis McGahee, I have worked out with him. It was a pretty cool feeling showing up to practice the first week of college and having an NFL running back on the line next to me. I also got the chance to say hello to A-Rod in the training room on my official visit.

Now that you have been a Miami resident for a few weeks, what advice would you give to LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade?

I would tell Lebron, Chris Bosh, and D Wade to skip a couple of Heat practices and to be our No. 1 fans on Thursday nights and Sunday afternoons.

What is something that you really want to do in Miami but haven’t had the chance to do yet?

Now that I’m going to school in a nice tropical area I really want to go scuba diving.
