Miami Track and Field Closes Regular Season With GT Invite

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami track and field teams – with a No. 14 national ranking on the women’s side – will compete at the Georgia Tech Invitational, May 14-15 at Griffin Track in Atlanta in the final regular season meet of 2010.
Nine women will be making the trip to Atlanta, with Ti’erra Brown, Takecia Jameson and Tameka Jameson holding top-20 national rankings in individual events. Both the 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams are ranked in the top-20 as well.
Brown will be competing in three events over the weekend. She is the nation’s second-ranked performer in both the 100 and 400m hurdles and is also a member of the 20th-ranked 4×400 team.
The Jameson sisters are ranked in the 400m hurdles and each will also run a leg of the 4×400 relay. Tameka is ranked 10th in the 400m hurdles with a season-best time of 57.57 seconds. Takecia is ranked 18th in the event, she is also scheduled to run in the 100m hurdles with Brown.
The 4×100 relay team of Ashley Dukes, Charlene Fuller, Kristy Whyte and Tarika Williams will look to improve upon Miami’s No. 18 ranking in the event on Saturday. With the exception of Whyte, each woman will be running in the 100m dash and all but Dukes will compete in the 200m dash.
Two jumpers looking to improve their stock this weekend will be Brittni Finch – competing in both the long and triple jumps – and high jumper Megan Novinger.
Finch, who claimed her first All-America honors during the indoor season in the long jump, is seeking an opportunity to return to the NCAA’s. Novinger is looking to improve upon her season-best mark of 1.80m (5-10.75), which ranks second all-time in school history.
The Hurricane men will also be sending eight student-athletes to the Peach State, led by Devon Hill, who is ranked 16th in the 110m hurdles.
Senior Cory Nelms who actually won the ACC Championship in the 110m hurdles, will only be competing individually in the 400m hurdles.
Travis Benjamin, Brandon McGee, Lamar Miller and DeMarcus Van Dyke are all scheduled to run in the 100m dash and in the 4×100 relay. Earlier this season, the men ran the fastest relay for a Miami 4×100 team in 12 years, when it won the event at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on April, 10, with a time of 40.15 seconds.
The `Canes top middle distance runner, Brian Laskowski will compete in the 800m dash and sophomore Jason Johnson is scheduled for the long jump and the 200m dash.
This weekend is the final opportunity for student-athletes to qualify for the NCAA Regional Championships. For the second consecutive season, the East Regional will be held in Greensboro, N.C., May 27-29.
