Reuben Ross Prepares for NCAA Diving Championships

March 22, 2010

Coral Gables, Fla. – University of Miami senior men’s diver Reuben Ross is set for the upcoming NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships, scheduled to begin Thurs., Mar. 25, at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

Ross is scheduled to compete on the 1-meter springboard for the Hurricanes, with the consolation finals set for 2 p.m. (CST) on Thurs., Mar. 25. The overall finals, consisting of the top six divers from the consolation finals, will begin at 8 p.m. (CST).

Ross earned the trip to the NCAA Championships after finishing second in the 1-meter event at the NCAA Zone “B” Championships in Atlanta just two weeks. The six-time All-American for the Hurricanes, and native of Regina, Saskatchewan (Canada), is seeking to gain his seventh All-American honor on Wednesday. In the process, he looks to lay claim to at least one All-American award in each of his four years in Coral Gables.

“I am as good as any of the other guys here,” stated Ross. “I just need to be confident in myself and my abilities, and make the University of Miami proud in my final collegiate competition.”

At last year’s NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas, Ross became just the fifth men’s diver in UM history to sweep All-American awards in the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform event. Only Miguel Velazquez (2004), Tyce Routson (1996, ’97, 2000), Chris Mantilla (1996, ’97, ’98) and Bryan Gillooly (1996, ’97) had accomplished that task before of collecting All-America honors in all three diving events in a single NCAA Championship event.

As a team, Miami picked up 40 points at the NCAA Championships, all under the diving duties of Ross. The Hurricanes finished 18th overall in the championships. Last season, Ross also helped the UM men’s diving team in being recognized as having posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. Those teams recognized during the 2008-09 year had an APR score of between 976 and a perfect 1000.

Considered one of the finest competition pools and diving wells in the nation, the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion’s new technology provides a venue for some of the fastest times and best diving in the country. The NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships will run Mar. 25-27.
