Miami's Shenise Johnson Named ACC Player of the Week

Feb. 8, 2010

CORAL GABLES – The Atlantic Coast Conference announced that Hurricane sophomore Shenise Johnson has been voted the ACC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for her play over the past week.

The ACC weekly accolade is voted on by the league’s “Blue Ribbon Panel,” which consists of national and local media members, as well as school representatives. The panel will vote for the ACC preseason poll, weekly honors and postseason all-conference teams for the 2009-10 season.

Johnson scored 25 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, dished out six assists and matched a career-high with eight steals as Miami defeated a top-10 squad for the first time since Dec. 19, 1991 – with its 80-69 victory over No. 9 North Carolina.

The league win for Miami allowed the Hurricanes to become eligible for postseason play for the first time since the 2005-06 season, which also was the last time that Miami won more than two games inside conference play.

Against SIU Edwardsville, the Henrietta, N.Y., native scored a team-high 16 points and just missed her seventh double-double of the season as she added nine rebounds.

So far this season, Johnson and teammate Riquna Williams have won the ACC accolade two times apiece. Miami is the only team in the ACC to have two different players honored so far this season and its total of four player of the week honors also leads the conference.

A season ago, Shenise Johnson was voted the ACC Rookie of the Week on three occasions.

The Hurricanes (16-7, 2-5) next face the Virginia Cavaliers (16-6, 5-3) in a crucial ACC match-up on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. at the BankUnited Center.
