Doyley and Nelms Lead `Canes in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Miami track and field teams were led by Deandra Doyley and Cory Nelms in the first full day of competition of the 2010 indoor track season, Saturday at the Kentucky Invitational at the Nutter Fieldhouse.
Doyley won the long jump with an indoor personal-best mark of 6.20m (20-04.25). The win came with an NCAA provisional mark, adding the senior to the list of candidates to participate in the national championships in March.
“It was a great opener for Deandra,” said Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Amy Deem.” She worked extremely hard this offseason and it showed with today’s performance.”
Doyley also advanced to the 60m hurdle final with a time of 8.64 seconds in her preliminary heat. She ran an 8.96 in the final.
Fellow senior, Christina Madry leapt 5.47m (17-11.50) in the event as well. Madry also participated in the triple jump, reaching a distance of 11.41m (37-05.25).
The 2009 ACC Indoor Champion in the 60m hurdles, Cory Nelms, didn’t race in the hurdle event on Saturday, but he still had an impact. The senior ran in the 60m dash and after advancing to the finals, Nelms tied the second-fastest time in school history with a 6.81 – placing fourth.
Like Nelms, Ti’erra Brown and Takecia Jameson are known for their prowess in the hurdles, but both competed in the 400m dash. Brown finished seventh in the event with a time of 55.47 seconds, while Takecia Jameson finished close behind her at 56.33 seconds.
Tameka Jameson ran in the 800m run and placed seventh at a time of 2:14.02.
Both Jamesons, Brown and sophomore Britney Clarke made up the 4×400 relay team for the `Canes, racing to a 3:44.70 finish in the event.
The men’s 4×400 team of Hill, Nelms, Blackie and Laskowski finished with a time of 3:18.09.
Ashley Dukes, coming off a redshirt season ran in the 60m dash. She along with Tara Thomas both advanced to the event final with times of 7.49 and 7.64 seconds, respectively. In the final, Dukes ran a 7.46 and finished fourth, while Thomas crossed the finish line once again in 7.64 seconds.
“I was very pleased by how well Ashley ran coming off a redshirt season,” said Deem.
In the men’s 60m hurdles, sophomore Devon Hill ran a personal best time of 8.04 seconds in his prelim heat and then finished sixth in the final with a time of 8.17 seconds.
Megan Novinger leapt 1.68m (5-06.00) in the high jump, just two centimeters shy of her personal-best.
Freshman Kyla Buckley reached 13.66m (44-09.75) in the shot put, while sophomore teammate Miranda Wilson’s mark was 13.03m (42-09.00).
A defensive tackle on the gridiron for the Hurricane football team, sophomore Micanor Regis participated in the men’s shot put and recorded a throw of 14.37m (47-01.75).
“As a group, the teams competed hard today,” added Deem. “It was a good season-opener for us and I look forward to what this year holds for both teams.”
Next week, the Hurricanes travel to Champaign, Ill to take part in the University of Illinois Carle/Health Alliance Classic on Saturday, Jan. 23.
