Miami's Shenise Johnson Named to Naismith Trophy Watch List

Nov. 19, 2009

CORAL GABLESThe University of Miami’s  Shenise Johnson has been named a pre-season candidate for the 2010 Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T, as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. The Naismith Trophy is presented annually to the nation’s top collegiate player.

Johnson, a Henrietta, N.Y. native, had arguably the best freshman performance by any Hurricane in school history.  After a nation-wide survey it was found that Johnson was the only player in the country to lead her team in scoring, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals during the 2008-09 season.  After three games so far this season, Johnson is averaging 17 points, nine rebounds and six assists per contest.

Johnson was one of 50 candidates nominated by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Board of Selectors, who will narrow the preseason list to 30 in January before voting on the final ballot in March.  Johnson is the first Miami player since Tamara James in 2004 to be named to the prestigious list.

The Atlantic Coast Conference placed nine women on the preseason list and lead all conferences with a total of eight teams represented.

The Hurricanes are 3-0 to start the 2009-10 season and will face UAB on the road in their next game Saturday at 2 p.m. in Birmingham, Ala.
