Simon Leads Men's Tennis at USF Invitational

Tampa, FlaDavid Simon was victorious in both singles and doubles competition to lead the University of Miami men’s tennis team versus USF on the final day of the USF Fall Invitational at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.

The senior (7-4) defeated the Bulls’ Peter Frank at No. 3, 6-2, 2-6, 10-5, to win his third straight and finish in a six-way tie for third place – along with teammate Christian Blöcker (6-3) – with eight points and in a team-high fifth place in doubles competition with 18 points.

Points were earned based on which flight the victory was earned in, with singles wins in flights one and two earning eight points, wins in flights three and four worth six points, wins in flights five and six worth four points and wins in flights seven and eight worth two points. In doubles competition, wins in the top-two flights are worth four points, while wins in flights three and four are worth two points.

In addition, Blöckerand Hector Nieto were victorious in both singles and doubles play for the Hurricanes, as Nieto also placed among the top 10 in singles competition. He defeated USF’s Yannick Yoshizawa at No. 6, 6-3, 2-6, 10-6, to finish in ninth place with six points.

Ignacio Taboada remains perfect at 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Mark Oljaca at No. 4.

The Hurricanes won two of three doubles matches on Sunday, as Simon and Blöcker claimed the top flight doubles match, 8-6, knocking off USF pair Wael Kilani and Yoshizawa to improve to 4-2.

Miami duo Barnabas Carrega and Nieto picked up their first doubles win of the season with an 8-5 victory over Alex Pukal and Juan Carlos.

Miami, host USF, UCF and LSU participated in the three-day invitational.  LSU’s Sebastian Carlsson claimed the singles crown with 24 points, while UCF duo Marc Rocafort and Blaze Schwartz tied for the doubles title with 12 points apiece.

The Hurricanes return to competition this spring, opening dual match play at home at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center versus FAU on Thurs., Jan. 21.
