ATLANTA – The University of Miami women’s basketball team fell to 11-10, 1-5 on the season with a 68-42 loss against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (15-5, 3-3) at the Alexander Memorial Coliseum on Thursday night.

The Hurricanes just could not muster up the offense it needed against a strong defensive Georgia Tech team. Miami suffered through four separate scoring droughts that totaled 22 minutes and 28 seconds throughout the game.

Freshman Riquna Williams and sophomore Epiphany Woodson led Miami with 10 points apiece on the night. Williams and Woodson combined to make all five Miami three-point field goals, the most the Hurricanes have made since a Jan. 5 contest against Clemson.

Sophomore Briyana Blair continued to prove her worth on the defensive end of the court as she tied Williams and Woodson with a team-high three steals. The Orlando native used her length to disrupt the Yellow Jacket passing lanes and drew a number of charges for Katie Meier’s squad.

Tech’s defense held the ‘Canes to a season-low 26.4 percent shooting from the field and Miami was just nine of 18 from the free-throw line.

South Anchorage, Alaska native Sylvia Bullock played 14 minutes in the game, the most time on the court she has seen since Dec. 29. and she made every minute count. The freshman scored five points, but consistently attacked the rim against the stingy Tech defense, drawing three separate fouls.

The Yellow Jacket triple threat of Iasia Hemingway, Alex Montgomery and Jacqua Willams was held to only 24 points, well below their 38-point average for the season.

The Hurricanes spotted Georgia Tech six points in the opening two minutes of the game before taking the lead on an 8-0 run of its own. However, with the game tied at 10, the Yellow Jackets went on a 13-0 run, with points coming from five different players.

Back-to-back steals by freshman Shenise Johnson helped the ‘Canes cut their deficit to nine points with 6:20 remaining in the half. Unfortunately, Miami wasn’t able to score another field goal in the opening period, as they trailed 35-17 going into the break.

Deja Foster had 12 first-half points for the home team while Woodson had eight, with two three-pointers.
