Men's Tennis Opens Gator Invitational

Gainesville, Fla… The University of Miami men’s tennis team continued fall tournament play on Friday, putting in a solid showing on day one of the University of Florida’s Gator Invitational at the Ring Tennis Complex. It marked the Hurricanes’ first return trip to Gainesville since May, when they came-from-behind to knock off the Gators to advance to the NCAA Tournament’s Round of 16.
No. 79 Carl Sundberg won his second singles match of the fall, battling back to defeat Mississippi State’s 109th-ranked George Coupland, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) in singles competition. Sundberg then paired with David Simon in doubles play, cruising to the 6-1 win over Mississippi State’s Louis Cant and Artem Ilyushin.
Waylon Chin, a transfer from the University of Illinois,was also victorious in both singles and doubles play in his Miami debut. The sophomore defeated MSU’s Daniel Sanchez, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0, and then joined up with Keith Crowley to squeeze past Mississippi State’s Coupland and Sanchez, 7-6 (7-5).
The Hurricanes return to action at the three-day Gator Invitational on Saturday.
