CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami cross country teams opened their season with the Greentree Invitational at Larry and Penny Thompson Park. The Hurricanes hosted five South Florida teams on the rain soaked course Friday night.
Sophomore Janet Price led the women’s squad with a time of 19:46.56 and was the third overall finisher in the 5K race. Her teammate, junior Anna Bona finished right behind her at 19:47.56.
Katharine Woodard was Miami’s third finisher at 20:16.16. Following her was freshman Allison Ludwick, sophomore Nehali Patel at 20:33.91 and 20:47.17. Juniors Monika Freiser and Jackie Sullivan rounded out the scoring for the host team.
“I was very pleased with the effort of the men and women today,” said assistant cross country coach Damon Griffiths. “Page and Anna did phenomenal for the first competition, we are ahead of where we were a year ago.”
Junior Charles Michel was the men’s top competitor as he placed seventh with a time of 16:16.47 in his first race as a Hurricane on the 5K course. Senior Julio Bonilla was the second finisher for the men at 16:33.04.
Also scoring for the shorthanded men’s team was Matthew Wilson (17:29.01), Damon Campbell (17:42.70) and Austin Rector (18:13.97).
“We had some strong showings on the men’s side from Charlie and Julio,” added Griffiths. “We are ready to put in some more work and get ready for the University of Florida.”
Florida Gulf Coast won the women’s race with a total of 42 points, while the Hurricanes finished with 57 points, coming in third.
The men’s team title went to Nova Southeastern as it scored 40 points. Miami was the fourth place team with 90 points.
The individual titles went to Megan Thies (19:39.66) of Florida Gulf Coast for the women and Trey Andrews (15:54.25) of FAU for the men.
Both the men’s and women’s teams for Miami return to action in two weeks on Friday, Sept. 18 when the teams travel to Gainesville, Fla. to take part in the Mountain Dew Invitational.
