Rome, Italy – University of Miami diver Reuben Ross completed the finals of the men’s 3-meter springboard with an 11th place finish (425.30 pts.) on Thursday afternoon as part of the FINA World Championships taking place at the Stadio del Nuoto in Rome. Ross is competing for Canada throughout the championships.

Ross, who finished Wednesday’s semifinals with a sixth place effort on the strength of a 463.00 total score, ended the finals with a score of 425.30.

The junior All-American and 2008 NCAA Champion (platform) performed six dives in the finals, collecting scores of 70 or higher on three dives. He began the afternoon with a 70.50 on his first dive, only to collect his second-highest score (79.05) on his second attempt … a Forward 3 ½ Somersault Pike.

The Regina, Saskatchewan native collected scores of 63.00 and 54.25 on his next two dives, respectively. His fifth dive, however, was his best of the day as he nailed an Inward 3 ½ Somersault Tuck for a score of 85.00–collecting four judges’ scores of 8.5 in the process.

China’s Chong He finished gold in the event scoring at 505.20, while Troy Dumais of the United States collected silver (498.40).

Ross’ countrymen Alexandre Despatie (Laval, Quebec) placed bronze with a score of 490.30. Earlier in the championships, Ross teamed with Despatie for a bronze medal in the synchronized 3-meter springboard.

Named the 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Men’s Diver of the Year, Ross will finish this year’s championships when he competes in the men’s 10-meter synchronized platform on Friday, July 24 with partner Riley McCormick. McCormick, a 17-year old native of Victoria, British Columbia, partnered with Ross last in 2008. The two combined for gold at the Winter Senior National Championships in the 10-meter synchro.

Ross is no stranger to the 10-m platform finishing as an All-American in 2008 and ’09. Ross ended the 2008-09 campaign with a sweep of three consecutive All-America honors at the NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas–claiming All-America honors in the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform.

The FINA World Championships or “World Aquatics Championships” are the World Championships for aquatic sports: diving, swimming, open water swimming, synchronized swimming and water polo. The Championships are run by FINA (Fédération Internationale de Natation). In the pool, swimming events are contested in a 50-meter, or “long course” pool.

The event was first held in 1973, and is now held every two years. From 1978-1998, the World Championships were held every four years, in the even years between Summer Olympic years. From 2001 on, the World Championships has been held every two years, in the off years.
