Hurricanes Help Family in Need

April 28, 2009

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami women’s soccer team, along with the women’s basketball and volleyball teams, paired up to give back to the community Saturday, April 25, participating in the Habitat for Humanity Project in the Liberty City section of northwest Miami. They helped to build a home for a deserving family, a project that has stretched for two weeks with UM athletic teams helping throughout.

The event was comprised of UM women’s athletics teams, as they helped to give back to the community that supports them so proudly. Also present on Saturday was Dr. Donna Shalala – President of the University of Miami, while Laura Kuhn (UM women’s volleyball assistant coach) and the women’s basketball staff assisted with the project as well.

They have been involved in aspects of the project from the ground up, so to speak, assisting in laying the foundation, stabling the foundation, and most recently roofing. Together, the Hurricanes paired with members of a professional construction crew and fellow volunteers to help build a home for a deserving family in the Miami-Dade community.

“I felt very fortunate to have the ability to help Zandra Flennory achieve her dream of owning a home and I enjoyed the experience Habitat for Humanity created,” said head coach Tricia Taliaferro. “I look forward to building another home for a family to enjoy!”

Miami worked tirelessly all day long on the project, helping to build the home. The Hurricanes took part in roofing the house for the majority of the day, as the swimming & diving and women’s soccer team helped to build the foundation last weekend.
