Hurricane Women Climb to No. 15 in National Poll
April 22, 2009
NEW ORLEANS -As announced by the USTFCCCA, the University of Miami women’s track team has moved up four spots to a season-best No. 15 ranking in the national poll, after its performance at the ACC Championship in Coral Gables this past weekend.
“Obviously I feel like we could have performed better at ACC’s,” said Director of Track and Field Amy Deem, after the Hurricanes placed fifth over the weekend. “I still feel that we have every opportunity to be successful at the national meet, if we continue to improve.”
One of the main reasons Miami made the jump in the polls was the season debut of senior Murielle Ahoure in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes. The sprinter won the ACC Championships in both events and her trial times of 11.34 and 22.98 rank Nos. 13 and 3 in the NCAA this season.
In addition to Ahoure, Kristy Whyte (100m, 200m), Tameka Jameson (400m hurdles) and Deandra Doyley (long jump) all improved on their previous regional qualifying marks to aid the team’s jump in the polls. Also, freshman Brittni Finch (6.20m, 20-04.25) grabbed her first regional mark over the weekend, finishing third in the long jump.
Deem went on to say, “We have many areas that I feel we can improve on to be very competitive in the six weeks until NCAA’s.”
A total of nine Hurricanes from the women’s team will be in action Thursday-Saturday, April 23-25 at the prestigious Penn Relays, held at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
