CORAL GABLES, FLA… – University of Miami All-Americans Daniel Vallverdu and Carl Sundberg were named to the All-ACC Men’s Tennis Team announced today by the conference office. The Hurricanes are among five ACC schools to place more than one student-athlete on the team.

It is the fourth-straight All-ACC honor for Vallverdu (16-4, 7-1 ACC), who enters this week’s ACC Championships ranked 13th in the country in singles competition and 50th in the nation in doubles play with fellow senior David Rosenfeld. The 2008 ITA Southeast Region Player to Watch, Vallverdu has recovered nicely from a late-fall injury that held him out for the beginning of dual match play. Since dropping his first singles match in his return in March, Vallverdu has won seven-straight ACC matches at the No. 1 position en route to a 7-1 conference record. The four-time All-American has knocked off nine ranked players this season and rides a seven-match win streak into the postseason.

Conversely, it is the first All-ACC honor for Sundberg – a sophomore who earned All-America recognition in doubles play with Vallverdu last season. He finished the regular season with a 19-5 record, including a team-best 9-1 mark in the ACC and a 16-2 record in dual matches while playing in the No. 3, 4 and 5 positions. Thirteen of his 16 spring wins came in straight sets, while his only two losses in dual-match play came in three sets. Sundberg – ranked No. 113th in the nation in singles compeititon – has won five-straight matches and eight of his last nine entering the postseason, and is just one win shy of becoming the third Hurricane to notch 20 wins this season.

Vallverdu, Sundberg and the 25th-ranked Hurricanes are seeded second in the ACC Men’s Tennis Championships in Cary, N.C., which begin today. Following their first-round bye, the Hurricanes will face the winner of today’s match between seventh-seeded Georgia Tech and 10th-seeded NC State on Friday, April 17, at noon.
