Two Hurricanes Head to NCAA Championships
March 12, 2009
CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami track and field teams will be represented by two student-athletes at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend at Texas A&M’s McFerrin Athletic Center in College Station, Texas, Feb. 13-14.
The 24th-ranked Lady Hurricanes will be represented by senior Murielle Ahoure, while the men’s team will be represented by junior Mikese Morse.
Ahoure has proved to be named among the nation’s top sprinters this season. The Bristow, Va. native is currently the No. 1 ranked collegiate sprinter in the 60-meter dash (7.17 seconds) and No. 3 in the 200-meters (23.14 seconds). The senior has participated in seven individual events this season, four 60-meters and three 200-meters, winning each of them.
Two weeks ago at the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championships, Ahoure dominated the field winning titles in both the 60 and 200-meter events, setting and then breaking the meet record in the latter event. For her efforts, she was named the ACC Track Performer of the Year.
Ahoure has previously earned All-American accolades for her 12th-place finish at the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships in the 60-meter dash.
Morse, an All-American himself, for his performance at the 2008 Outdoor National Championships, earned his spot in College Station with a personal-best in the long jump at the ACC Championships. The Tampa native reached a distance of 7.90m (25-11.00) claiming second-place and all-ACC honors.
The junior broke Horace Copeland’s 17-year-old school record with the leap and heads the National Championships with the fourth-ranked collegiate mark.
The two-day NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships kick off Friday as Texas A&M becomes the first new host of the event in 10 years. The University of Arkansas has hosted for the past nine seasons.
