Murielle Ahoure Named ACC's Most Valuable Performer

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Miami `s Murielle Ahoure has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Indoor Track and Field Performer of the Year for her performance at the ACC Championships Feb. 27-28.
Ahoure, won both the 60 and 200-meter conference title at the ACC Indoor Championships. She set the meet record with her qualifying run in the 200-meters, with a time of 23.16, only to break it again the next day in the finals at 23.14.
“The ACC’s were a great championship and there were many great performances,” said the director of track and field Amy Deem. “I think it’s a great achievement for Murielle to earn this great honor.”
Earlier in the season, Ahoure broke Lauryn Williams’ 60-meter dash record with blistering time of 7.17, an effort that once held as the World’s fastest time this season. Both her 60 and 200-meter times are the fastest collegiate times in the nation in 2009.
Also, in the 200-meter dash, Ahoure ran the then fastest time in the world, winning the event in 23.14 seconds. The automatic time ranks second all-time at the University of Miami and is the top-collegiate time of 2009.
The ACC Performer of the Year award is the third straight won by a Hurricane woman. The 2008 indoor honor went to Krista Simkins who won individual titles in the 200 and 400-meters. In the 2008 outdoor season, Kristy Whyte claimed the honor after winning both the 100 and 200-meter championships.
“It truly is an honor to have a member of our program win this award for the third-straight time,” added Deem. “It shows how hard each student-athlete and member of our coaching staff works year round.”
The Bristow, Va. native will next compete at the NCAA National Indoor Championships, which will be held on the campus of Texas A&M in College Station, Texas, March 13-14.
