Brittany Viola Finishes Up at World Selection Camp

Feb. 11, 2009

Columbus, Ohio – University of Miami junior diver Brittany Viola took part in the World Championship Team Selection Camp this week, finishing up on Wednesday, Feb. 11, where she scored high marks on the platform in the three-day event at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.

Viola scored two second place and one third place dive on the platform Wednesday where she registered her highest performance on her second dive, collecting a score of 369.80. That was a second place finish for the Orlando native. Her second-highest dive resulted in a second place finish as well with a score of 331.80.

Her Inward 3 ½ Somersault Tuck netted the score of 369.80, while the Back 2 ½ Somersault Pike confirmed her second Top 3 dive of the morning.

First place honors on three-of-four dives went to Haley Ishimatsu of the Trojan Dive Club, competing independently for the USA Diving Team.

Viola also manned a third place score of 325.80 on her first dive for the platform.

Over on the 1-meter springboard, Viola had her highest score of 285.40 and a first place mark for her final dive–a forward 2 ½ Somersault Pike. She would also have a third place score of 269.40 for her second dive of the day–a reverse 1 ½ somersault, 1 ½ twist free.

“I am very happy with my performance today,” commented Viola afterwards. “Competing two lists yesterday made today a bit more challenging, but by keeping a positive mind-set and focusing on the main corrections for each dive, I preserved.”

UM veteran head diving coach Randy Ableman is confident that Viola could be selected to this year’s team after a stellar performance on the platform–undoubtedly her best event after finishing the 2008 season with All-American and National Championship awards.

The world championship team selections should be made on Feb. 15, and will be posted on the USA Diving website at www.usadiving.org.
