Shenise Johnson Tabbed ACC Rookie of the Week

Jan. 5, 2009

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Miami freshman guard Shenise Johnson has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week after she averaged over 14 points per game to lead UM to a 2-1 record during a three-game, 14-day stretch.

Johnson, one of the ACC’s top freshmen, averaged 14.3 points and 7.3 rebounds the last two weeks. She also dealt out a total of 10 assists and had 10 steals to go with three blocks in that span

Against No. 9/10 Auburn, Johnson tied career-highs with 21 points and three blocks.  Against Cornell, Johnson scored in single-digits for only the third time this season, but she racked up six steals to go along with six rebounds and four assists. The contest against Brown and Auburn came in the UM Holiday Tournament, where Johnson was named to the all-tournament team.

The 2008 McDonald’s High School All-American currently leads all ACC freshmen in points (13.3), rebounds (7.6), assists (3.86), free-throw percentage (.844) and steals (3.07).  She is also tied for second with 1.14 blocks per game and in sole possession of second place with a 1.42 assist/turnover ratio.

Johnson has won the ACC Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, the first coming on December 1.  She is the first multi-winning rookie if the week since Tamara James in the 2002-03 season.  That season James won the award a total of five times.
