Hurricanes Open ACC Play Hosting Clemson

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami women’s basketball team welcomes the Clemson Tigers to the BankUnited Center in each teams ACC opener, Monday, Jan. 5, with tip off set for 4 p.m. The Hurricane men are set to face the FAU Owls at 7 p.m.

Miami is fresh off of their second win over an Ivy League program with its 61-47 victory over Cornell on Friday. In that contest, the Hurricanes were led by freshman Riquna Williams. The Pahokee, Fla. native scored a career and game-high 18 points, including two three-pointers. For her second-straight game, senior LaToya went for 12 points. Shenise Johnson scored in single-digits for only the third time this season, but she six rebounds, six steals and four assists. Also in the win over Cornell, The Hurricanes forced 31 turnovers. It was the third time on the season that Miami has induced that many turnovers in a game. So far this season, the `Canes have forced an average of 22.8 turnovers per game, which is sixth in the ACC.
A Look at Clemson
Clemson comes to Coral Gables with a 9-4 record, 10th in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Tigers are led by Lele Hardy who is averaging 18.1 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. Sthefany Thomas and Whitney Hood score 9.1 and 9.0 points per game respectively. Clemson is averaging 68.2 points and 36.8 rebounds per game as a team. It is shooting 42.4 percent (344-812) from the floor, 31.4 percent (61-194) from beyond the arc and 69.2 (137-198) from the free throw line. The Tigers also register 10.6 steals and 4.8 blocked shots per outing, while holding their opponents to 63.7 points per game and a shooting percentage of 40.6 (290-714).
The Series
The Tigers and the Hurricanes will be the first two teams to play an ACC game as the lone game on the conference schedule Monday. These two teams are 3-3 against each other, with their first meeting coming in 1981. In the last meeting a season ago, the Hurricanes went into Littlejohn Coliseum and took a 66-61 win, the first of two ACC victories in 2007-08 for UM.
