Game Notes
Nov. 1, 2008
Former Cavalier baseball player and current Washington National third baseman Ryan Zimmerman raised the Power of Orange flag during today’s pregame festivities.
At halftime former Cavaliers John Papit and Tom Scott had their jerseys retired. Papit was a rare fullback who had the speed and quickness to go all the way every time he touched the ball. He earned first-team All-America honors in 1949 when he rushed for 1214 yards. He finished his career in 1950 as the NCAA’s and UVa’s all-time leading rusher with 3238 yards. Scott was a standout two-way end on some of the leading Cavalier squads in school history from 1950-52. He earned first-team All-America honors in 1952 while helping UVa post an 8-2 record. Individuals recognized in this way will have their jersey retired, but their number will remain active.
Today’s loss ends UVa’s two-game overtime winning streak. The Cavaliers are now 2-4 all-time in OT contests.
WR Kevin Ogletree’s 16-yard TD run was his first rush this season. It also marked the first rushing TD of his career as well as the first rushing touchdown by a UVa WR since Billy McMullen scored from 1-yard out vs. Clemson in 2002.
Ogletree’s second reception of the game was the 100th of his career as he became the 14th player in school history to catch at least 100. He is currently tied with Bruce McGonnigal (1987-90) and Tyrone Davis (1991-94) for 11th in school history with 103 receptions.
Ogletree extended his streak to 21 consecutive games with at least one reception, tied as the ninth-longest streak in school history with Billy McMullen (1999-2000). Patrick Jeffers holds the school record with a catch in 31 games in a row from 1993-95.
Ogletree has caught at least two passes in every game in his 21-game streak. That is the second-longest streak with at least two receptions in school history; Billy McMullen had a 25-game streak with at least two receptions from 2000-02.
WR Maurice Covington caught four passes for 54 yards, the fifth game in a row he has caught at least three passes.
TE John Phillips established a career high with seven receptions. It was the most catches by a Cavalier tight end in a game since Jonathan Stupar caught seven vs. Miami in 2006.
Phillips has had some big performances against Miami during his career. In addition to catching a career-high seven passes, he had four catches for 77 yards last season. In 2006 he had the longest catch of his career – a 44 yarder – vs. the Hurricanes.
Phillips now has 42 receptions this season, tied for 12th in ACC history for tight end receptions in a season and tied for second most in UVa history by a tight end. Former Cavalier All-American Heath Miller caught a record 70 passes in 2003 from his tight end position.
Jared Green, a redshirt freshman, recorded his first career TD catch today. He finished with three catches for 25 yards.
DE Alex Field had the first multiple sack game in his career. He finished today’s contest with two sacks and now has five for the season.
P Jimmy Howell’s 58-yard punt was a career best. His previous long was 54 yards at Duke. Howell finished with a 42.7-yard average on seven punts. That is the best average of his career for a game with more than one punt (he had one punt for 49 yards last week vs. Georgia Tech).
Howell dropped five punts inside the 20-yard line today, the most by a Cavalier punter since Tom Hagan also had five vs. Duke in 2003.
QB Marc Verica threw for 240 yards today, the second-highest total of his career, and the fifth game in a row he passed for at least 200 yards. He is only the third QB in UVa history with at least five 200-yard games in a row. Matt Schaub had six in a row in 2003, while Scott Secules had a five-game streak in 1987.
TB Cedric Peerman rushed for a team-leading 78 yards today and now has a career-high 619 yards. His previous high was 585 yards in six games last season (before he missed the rest of the season with an injury).
