Bradenton, Fla. – JC Whitner of the University of Miami men’s tennis team won both the singles and doubles title for the Hurricanes at the Scott Tribley Tournament in Bradenton on Saturday.

The junior advanced to the finals after winning three-straight matches. He knocked off Temple’s Eduardo Saavedra, 6-2, 6-3, FAMU’s Artiom Podgainil, 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 and Illinois’ Connor Roth, 6-1, 7-6.

Whitner then downed FAMU’s Michael Moore, 6-1, 6-3 in the championship match.

Hector Nieto paired with Whitner as the Miami juniors claimed the doubles title. The duo defeated FAMU’s Moore and Artiom Podgainil, 8-5, to close a successful afternoon.

“JC is getting tougher mentally as his game progresses,” said fifth-year head coach Mario Rincon. “In doubles, JC and Hector are playing very well together. They complement each other on the court and are having a lot of fun playing doubles together.

“We won a lot of matches today that will help us get better for the rest of the fall and the spring season ahead.”

Nieto went 2-1 at the tournament in singles play, beating Eckerd’s Aaron Kleefield and Ben Maxwell in straight sets, while Westin Wendt dropped a pair of matches.

The Hurricanes return to action on Thurs., Oct. 16, at the ITA Southeast Championships in Lexington, Ky.
