Miami Falls to No. 12 Boston College, 4-1
Oct. 2, 2008
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team (7-4-2, 0-2-1) couldn’t overcome a strong showing from the 12th-ranked Boston College Eagles (8-1-2, 2-0-1) Thursday evening, falling by a 4-1 score.
First half goals from Boston College’s Caitlin Hiler and Brooke Knowlton were all the scoring the home team needed to claim their second ACC victory.
The Hurricanes were unable to find momentum with their offense, recording only one shot with none on goal in the opening half.
The beginning of the second half didn’t help matters for the Hurricanes as goal from BC’s Julia Bouchelle and Alyssa Pember gave the Eagles a 4-0 lead after 56 minutes of play.
“We are still trying to find our rhythm, replacing the players that have been injured,” said head coach Tricia Taliaferro. “I thought we played better than the score showed, but we suffered from some mental break downs, which cost us.”
One of the players looked on to get the offense going will be freshman Ashlee Burt.
The Saddle River, N.J. native showed signs of helping a team that is looking to break out from a six game winless streak, after starting the season with seven straight victories. Burt scored her second goal of the season in the 61st minute on a set piece started by Lauren Singer. After Singer took the initial shot from 25 yards out, Burt found the rebound for the score.
“We have to fix some things,” said Burt. “We’ve had a rough stretch these last six games, but I believe that we will make the right adjustments and we will be ready for Sunday.”
Vikki Alonzo did what she could to slow down a Boston College offense that rattled off a total of 31 shots. The freshman keeper tied a career-high with 11 saves on the night as the team allowed a season-high four goals.
Burt’s goal was the highlight for the Miami offense but as she has all season, Brittany Bucknor provided the offense with fresh legs off the bench, firing off two shots on goal in the second half.
Miami remains on the road as the face-off against Taliaferro’s alma mater, Maryland, this Sunday. Game time is set for 1p.m.
The Hurricanes return to Cobb Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 12 when they face 2007 NCAA finalist Florida State at 12 p.m.
