Robinson Introduced as Associate Track Coach

CORAL GABLES – Amy Deem, the director of track and field/cross country, has named Calvin Robinson as the associate track coach at the University of Miami. Robinson’s coaching duties will include jumps and the multi events.
“Coach Robinson is a great addition to our staff. He brings a tremendous amount of knowledge and leadership to our jumping and combined events group,” said Deem. “Under Calvin, we look forward to maintaining our tradition of excellence in the jumps at the University of Miami.”
Robinson spent the last four seasons in a similar position at UTEP, where he coached a total of 16 All-Americans in various jumping and sprint events. His jumpers scored 20 of the team’s 25 points in leading the Lady Miners to a top-10 finish at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor National Championships.
Also in 2008, he coached Mickael Hanany to a national championship in the men’s high jump. Hanany went on to represent France in the high jump in the Beijing Olympics. Hanany was joined in the Olympic Games by Blessing Okagbare, who won a bronze medal in the long jump representing Nigeria.
Robinson also has experience coaching multi-sport athletes. While at UTEP, he tutored Johnnie Lee Higgins to a provisional qualifying mark in the indoor long jump. Higgins is currently in his second year as a wide receiver with the Oakland Raiders.
For his accomplishment, Robinson was named the 2008 USTFCCCA Mountain Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year.
Prior to UTEP, Robinson was the jumps coach at his alma mater, Sam Houston State, for four years. Under his guidance, Precious Madison became the school’s first Division I All-American, in the long jump in 2001.
A 2000 graduate of Sam Houston State, Robinson completed his master’s degree at the school in 2004 in kinesiology.
Robinson holds Level I and Level II (sprints/hurdles) certification from the United States of American Track and Field Association.

While a student-athlete, he was an NCAA qualifier in the long jump in 1998 and All-Southland Conference in both the long and triple jumps in 1998 and 1999. He holds the SHSU school record in the long jump with a best of 25-5 1/2 (7.76) and ranks in the school’s top 10 in the triple jump (50-8/15.44). He was also a three-year starter on the football team.Robinson is the father of 7 year old twin sons, Kendall and Kamron. He and his wife reside in Miami.
