Opening statement…
“The guys came out very well in the first half by executing in the offense and in the defense. But we had too many penalties in the second quarter and we had a turnover that we talked about at halftime. We responded in the second half with a big punt return touchdown. But it was the first game, so we always have to get better and make corrections. Tomorrow we’ll look at the tapes and fix the errors from tonight, but we’re doing the right things and we’re on the right track.”
On quarterback Jacory Harris…
“Jacory did well. He executed what we wanted him to do on offense well, and I’m excited about the way he played. He feels good about himself, but there are always things to improve. It’s our jobs as coaches to make the team perfect and get to that point of perfection.”
On Harris’ nerves…
“Jacory never gets nervous. He’s a calm person and always has been. He understands the game. His dad and I played against each other in high school so he has the football family and football blood in him.”
On playing 16 true freshmen…
“We don’t have to play young guys because of the depth of our team. But we have a lot of confidence in these young guys, and we’re going to continue to play these young guys if they keep playing well and keep competing and practicing every week. But they make it easy for the coaches because they practice real hard everyday.”
On 11 players catching passes…
“Like I said earlier, this is a balanced team. We have our tight ends and each receiver doing well. When you play a bunch of young guys, you’re going to get a lot of catches. Everyone is going to contribute to this football club.”
Freshman quarterback Jacory Harris
On first game in new stadium…
“It feels good to have our home crowd here. It’s good to place a home game first, to get the jitters out and things like that.”
On touchdown run…
“I kind of had a couple of guys open, but as I stepped up to the pocket I saw lanes open and I just figured ‘why not run the ball?’. I was kind of nervous on the clay because we couldn’t really get a grasp of it. I thought I was going to slip but eventually I scored.”
On his emotions…
“There’s no emotions. I just know that I have to go to practice and try hard and play hard and do the things the coaches ask of me to do. As long as I do those things, everything will work out.”
On team’s performance…
“As a team, I felt that we did good. I just went out there and put my teammates in positions so they could make plays. I learned that if I give the ball to my teammates everything will be okay. I don’t need to be the one going out there and making spectacular plays and things like that.”
On getting butterflies…
“I’m not the type of person to have butterflies. I just go out there and play the game. It’s my job. It’s something that I’m on scholarship for so I just have to go out there and do it.”
On what made a difference in the game…
“All those running backs… They’re the leaders of the backfield. They’re the ones to step it up and even help out with the signals. That’s why we have them back there.”
On starting as QB…
“The moment that it hit me was after I walked back out after warm-ups. Seeing how many fans were there, it just made me realize how important football is, and [how important] the University of Miami is to this community. I know there were a lot of people behind me, and a lot of people behind this team so I had to go out there and perform for them.”
On difference from high school football to college…
“Of course the game is much quicker. You have athletes from all over. No matter who you’re playing, it’s the best of the best. Whether it’s Charleston Southern or some other team, it’s always going to be quick and fast.”
Senior linebacker Glenn Cook
On the younger guys…
“I think they got a lot of work in camp, they practiced a lot. We really focused on being mentally prepared. That is something that Coach Young really emphasized, so I think they handled that well.”
On advice for the Florida game…
“That is a big game, but we have a lot of guys who have been to state championships. But all of this is on a new level. Just calm yourself down and be relaxed because you know it’s going to be fun.”
On Jacory Harris…
“Most of our freshmen are really mature – I’ve been saying that all camp. They seem to be a little bit older than the age they are. So I wasn’t surprised [on Jacory’s performance] – he is my roommate and was calm the whole time. I was fine and happy with what he did tonight. He went out there and really played well.”
On Dolphin Stadium’s atmosphere…
“Our fans came out and supported us and hopefully we continue to win and continue to improve. We need that support. Our community is great, we have great fans. They came out and supported us and put people in the stands. It feels good.”

On Miami playing well and using so many freshmen…
“They absolutely played well. They set high standards and high goals for themselves. When you play any opponent as a coach, you expect the very best from your competition no matter if you’re playing an FBS opponent or an FCS opponent. Whether it’s Florida or Charleston Southern or anyone in between, we expect to get their best effort and we did tonight… I was very impressed with the potential that their squad has. You can really see what Coach Shannon has established and what he is building towards.”
On transfer QB Tribble Reese…
“First and foremost, he is a first-class individual. The thing about him is his intangible qualities exceed his tangible qualities, and his tangible qualities are that he has the ability to play throughout the country. It just happens to be at most FBS schools you play every position by committee – except for the quarterback. His [coming to Charleston Southern] was about opportunity. Charleston Southern has been a perfect fit for him and he has been a perfect fit for us.”

On their game plan…
“We had a game plan… and it always looks good on paper. There were a couple of drives where we started to move the ball, but things didn’t happen the way we wanted to. But you have to expect that in a football game, especially when you are playing such a good opponent as Miami. They came out – props to them, they played a great game. But, like I said, you have a game plan and it works for a little while, but it doesn’t work every drive and that’s what the game of football is.”
