Reuben Ross Qualifies for Next Phase of Olympic Event

Beijing, China – University of Miami All-American diver Reuben Ross scored 446.15 points to qualify for the second phase of the men’s 3-meter springboard at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.

Ross, an NCAA champion this past spring in the 3-meter springboard, participated for his home country of Canada on Monday morning in his best event. UM veteran diving coach Randy Ableman served as the individual coach for Ross in this year’s Olympic Games.

Ross started off the final round of the event in 19th place, but collected an 87.5 on his final dive to vault into sixth place at that time with a total score of 446.15. He would end up in the 13th position overall, while teammate Alexandre Despatie sits in ninth (453.60).

Ross will start off Tuesday’s second qualifying round in 13th place. He Chong of China sits in first place after the first round of qualifying with a score of 515.50.

In other diving action recently, UM women’s diver Jenna Dreyer finished in 28th place with a score of 210.90 in the women’s 3-meter springboard for the Republic of South Africa. UM’s Ableman also served as the head coach for the Republic of South African team.

Ross is slated to dive again Tuesday morning at 10 a.m.
