Viola In Fourth After Semifinal Round of U.S. Olympic Trials

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Miami’s diving tandem of sophomore Brittany Viola and freshman J.J. Kinzbach are currently in fourth and sixth place respectively after Friday’s semifinal round of the platform events at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Diving Trials at the IU Natatorium.

 

Viola, a native of Orlando, Fla. finished the semifinal round with a combined score of 679.65 after the first two days of the trials. After turning in a 45.00 on her first dive Friday, she bounced back with scores of 60.80 and 81.60 on her second and third dives respectively to put her in fifth after three dives. Another solid score of 75.40 on her fourth dive set up her fifth and final dive that resulted in a score of 88.40, her best mark of the night.

 

After finishing fourth in the quarterfinal round, Kinzbach, a native of Montgomery, Texas, came in sixth in the semifinal round with a combined two-day score of 838.15. After carrying over a score of 428.40 from Wednesday, Kinzbach turned in scores of 66.00, 78.40, 64.35, 39.10, 75.20 and 86.70 to finish in the middle of the 11-diver field.

 

Also on the women’s side, former UM diver Heather Bounds turned in scores of 66.00, 56.00, 37.95, 68.00 on her first four dives before earning a score of 80.00 on her final dive for a total score of 541.80, good enough for seventh place overall.

 

Laura Wilkinson (813.50) and Haley Ishiumatsu (757.55) continue to lead the way on the women’s platform, while David Boudia (1,091.90), Thomas Finchum (1,065.25) and Drew Livingston (987.90) are in a three-way race for the top spot on the men’s side.

 

The finals for both the men’s and women’s platform will be televised live on Sunday on NBC from 3-4 p.m. and 5-6 p.m. EST.

 

Only the winners will be nominated to the U.S. Olympic Team. A second individual will be decided at a team selection camp in Knoxville, Tenn., from July 2-6. The top six finishers at the trials will be invited to the camp.
