Women's Soccer Adds Greg Sheen to Coaching Staff

CORAL GABLES – <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>University of Miami head soccer coach Tricia Taliaferro has announced the addition of Greg Sheen to the soccer coaching staff. Along with playing professionally, Sheen has been a successful collegiate and club coach as he brings a wealth of knowledge to the Hurricane program.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Sheen has spent the last two years as the Director of Coaching for the AU Capital Soccer Club in Austin, Texas. Prior to that, he spent the 2005 season as an assistant coach at the University of Texas. In 2004, Sheen was named the head coach at MoreheadStateUniversity, where he led the Eagles to a 9-9-1 overall record, including a 4-4 mark in the Ohio Valley Conference. As a result of his accomplishments, Sheen was recognized as the Ohio Valley Conference’s Coach of the Year.
“Greg brings a different dimension to the staff and I am excited to have someone of his caliber join us. His interest is a reflection of the direction Miami soccer is headed on the National level. I believe with Greg’s experience, knowledge, professionalism, and personality he will be a positive addition to this program,” said Taliaferro.
Prior to his year at MoreheadState, Sheen served as the women’s assistant soccer coach at the University of Dayton for four years (1999-2003). At Dayton, he was involved in all aspects of soccer operations, including: scouting, scheduling, training and recruiting, and also served as the team’s primary goalkeeping coach. With his assistance over those four years, the Flyers made their first NCAA Championship appearance in 1999 and also qualified for NCAA competition in 2001 and 2002 while compiling a record of 76-16. Dayton also attained top 25 rankings in both 2001 and 2002.
Sheen holds a USSF National “B” Coaching License and a NSCAA Advanced National Coaching Diploma. His previous club soccer experience includes working in the Capitals Club in Austin, Texas, serving as the Director of the DaytonSoccerAcademy (1999-2004) and as the Director of Coaching at the Atlanta Tophat Soccer Club. He was also named the Georgia State Girl’s Youth Coach of the Year in 1999.
Sheen is a former staff member of the Region II and III ODP programs and has previously been named Youth Coach of the Year in the Ohio-South Youth League Program.
Before beginning his coaching career, Sheen played professional soccer in the United States with the A-League’s Atlanta Ruckus during the outdoor season and NPSL’s Atlanta Attack during the indoor campaign.
A graduate of the University of Dayton in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in general studies (with an emphasis in sport management); Sheen now lives in Coral Gables, Fla. and has three children, Meghan, Hannah and Catherine.
