Viola Misses Cut For Three-Meter Finals Friday In Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio – University of Miami sophomore diver Brittany Viola, a day after earning All-American status with a seventh-place finish in the women’s one-meter event, placed 37th in the preliminary round of the three-meter event Friday at the 2008 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships at Ohio State University’s McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Viola, who missed the cut for Friday night’s finals, will now turn her attention to her strongest event — Saturday’s platform competition. Last week at the Zone `B’ Championships, Viola scored an impressive 335.30 in the platform final, beating the field by more than 35 points. As a freshman at the 2007 NCAA Championships, Viola earned All-American status in the platform after a sixth place finish of 294.55 in <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Minneapolis, Minn.
In Friday’s three-meter prelims, Viola finished with scores of 49.00, 27.00, 39.00, 44.95, 54.60 and 32.40 for an overall mark of 246.95. Hawai’i’s Emma Friesen, who won the one-meter finals with a top score of 336.20 on Thursday, also put in the best mark of 362.90 in the three-meter prelims.
Saturday’s platform schedule remains the same as the previous two days of diving events. The preliminary round is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. with the finals following later that evening at 7 p.m.
