Renee Taylor Invited to WNBA Pre-Draft Camp

March 16, 2007

Coral Gables, Fla. – University of Miami senior guard Renee Taylor (Harlem, N.Y.) has been invited to participate in the WNBA Pre-Draft Camp at Cleveland State University from March 30-31.

The league’s annual Pre-Draft Camp gives WNBA coaches and general managers the opportunity to evaluate the skills of approximately 40 top global prospects. Players will participate in on-court sessions and compete against one another in hopes of improving their draft status.

As a senior in 2006-07, Taylor was an All-ACC Second Team pick after leading the league in both scoring (18.6 ppg) and free throw percentage (84.3). The 5-2 guard also ranked among the ACC’s leaders in three-point field goals per game (2.3) and three-point field goal percentage (31.3).

After scoring in double figures in 53 of 60 career games at Miami – including a program-best 42-point performance at Houston on December 19, Taylor became just the sixth Hurricane to break the 1,000-point plateau in her first two seasons and wrapped up her two-year Miami career with 1,025 points to rank 19th among UM’s all-time scoring leaders.

Taylor also finished her collegiate career as the `Canes’ most efficient free throw shooter, converting 84 percent from the line, tied the school record with seven three-pointers in her 42-point performance at Houston and is fourth in three-point field goals made with 118 in just two seasons.

A Hurricane has been invited to the Pre-Draft Camp for the second-straight year under head coach Katie Meier. Prior to Taylor’s invitation in 2007, former Miami All-American Tamara James was invited to the 2006 Pre-Draft Camp en route to being selected with the eighth overall pick by the Washington Mystics in the WNBA Draft.

Should Taylor be taken in the 2007 Draft, she would be the third player in UM history to do so, joining James and former Hurricane Octavia Blue, who was selected by the Los Angeles Sparks in the second round (15th overall) of the 1998 WNBA Draft.

The 2007 WNBA Draft will be held in Cleveland on Wednesday, April 4, with ESPN2 broadcasting exclusive first round coverage live at 1 p.m, with continued coverage of the second and third rounds on ESPNU and NBA TV. The draft culminates a week-long schedule of events surrounding women’s basketball in Cleveland, including the NCAA Women’s Final Four (April 1 and 3) and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association National Convention.
