ACC Tournament Ends in Penalty Kicks for Miami
Nov. 7, 2007
Lake Buena Vista, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team held 10th-ranked Virginia scoreless through 110 minutes, but it wasn’t enough as the Cavaliers edged the Hurricanes, 4-2, in penalty kicks to advance to Friday’s ACC Soccer Championship semifinals.
Although Virginia (11-3-5) had the advantage over Miami (9-6-5) in both shots (23-4) and corner kicks (13-3), the Hurricane defense kept the Cavaliers in check through the double-overtime scoreless tie, preventing any of UVA’s 23 shots to hit their mark. UM senior goalkeeper Lauren McAdam (Simsbury, Conn.) registered a season-high nine saves in 110 minutes of work, while Virginia keeper Chantel Jones finished with three saves.
“I’m very proud of this team for playing hard and creating the opportunity to win this game,” noted Miami head coach Tricia Taliaferro, the 2007 ACC Coach of the Year. “It is a lesson learned, and we will take this experience with us as we continue to grow and improve as a team.”
The next step for the team will be determined by the NCAA, who will announce the 64-team NCAA Tournament field on Mon., Nov. 12, from 8-8:30 p.m. on ESPNews.
