Taliaferro, Steinbruch Headline All-ACC Honors
Nov. 6, 2007
Coral Gables, Fla. – University of Miami head soccer coach Tricia Taliaferro was voted ACC Coach of the Year and freshman Brittney Steinbruch (Wyckoff, N.J.) earned Freshman of the Year accolades as the Atlantic Coast Conference announced the 2007 all-conference teams on Tuesday.
Steinbruch was also named to the All-ACC First Team and All-ACC Freshmen Team, while fellow freshman Lauren Singer (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) earned All-ACC Second Team honors.
Taliaferro earned her first ACC Coach of the Year nod after leading the Hurricanes to wins over a pair of top-10 opponents – including handing defending national champion North Carolina its only conference loss of the season – and to a fifth-place finish in the league.
Steinbruch earned Freshman of the Year recognition and became the first Hurricane soccer player named to the All-ACC First Team after a sensational freshman campaign for the `Canes. The 5-8 forward leads the ACC with 110 shots and six game-winning goals on the season, and is second in the league with 16 goals and 35 points. Entering this week’s ACC Soccer Championship, she ranks eighth in the NCAA with 0.842 goals per game and 16th in the nation with 1.84 points per game. Steinbruch was one of two Hurricanes to earn NSCAA National Player of the Week honors this season.
Singer also put together a strong freshman campaign, finishing the regular season ranked among the ACC’s top 10 in shots (2.47), points (1.05), goals per game (0.37) and assists per game (0.32). The 5-8 forward started all 19 games of the regular season and ranks second on the team with seven goals and 18 points, while tying for the team lead with four assists.
The fifth-seeded Hurricanes open ACC Championship competition on Wednesday versus fourth-seeded Virginia. Winners of the game advance to Friday’s semifinals to take on the victor of the game between top-seeded North Carolina and eighth-seeded Clemson.
