Winston-Salem, N.C. – The No. 25 University of Miami women’s soccer team suffered just its second shutout of the season to drop its regular-season finale, 2-0, on the road at 12th-ranked Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Hurricanes (9-6-4, 4-4-2 ACC) finish the regular season in a program-best fifth place in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and will advance – along with the league’s top-eight teams – to the ACC Soccer Championship at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 7. The Demon Deacons (11-5-3, 6-2-2), winners of four straight, finish the regular season in second place in the ACC.
Miami was held to a season-low seven shots on Sunday, but managed four on goal, while Wake Forest managed to fire off 11 shots, including six on goal.
Wake Forest opened up scoring in the 43rd minute, as Amy Smerdzinksi netted the game-winner from 17 yards out for the 1-0 advantage before the break.
Miami came out strong after intermission, and controlled the ball for the first 15 minutes, but was unable to score. The Demon Deacons added a second goal in the 76th minute, as Allie Sadow broke through the Hurricane defense and took a shot from the middle of the penalty area.
Miami senior Lauren McAdam (Simsbury, Conn.) finished with four saves in 90 minutes.
