CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming and diving team defeated the Houston Cougars Friday afternoon, 179-101, at UM’s Norman Whitten Student Union Pool to improve to 4-1 this season.

Britta Boesing led the Hurricanes with wins in both the 100-yard backstroke event (57.18) and the 200-yard IM event (2:06.65). Magdalena Waszkiewicz picked up a win in the 100-yard breaststroke event in a time of 1:05.53 while Kellly Peloquin finished second with a mark of 1:06.15. Peloquin had a first-place finish of her own in the 200-yard breaststroke event, coming in at a time of 2:24.03.

Katie Eason and Annika Saarnak came in first and second respectively in the 100-yard butterfly, with times of 57.13 and 58.33 while Kirsten Pomerleau won the 50-yard free event in convincing fashion, winning by more than a second with a time of 23.88 to Marina Dadic’s second-place time of 25.25.

Capria DeVenuto cruised to a win in the 200-yard butterfly event, finishing five seconds ahead of her teammate Deidre Novotny, who finished in second.

Miami’s two relay teams finished with the top two times in the 200-yard freestyle event, with the “A” team coming in at 1:36.92 and the “B” team at 1:41.88.

In diving competition, Brittany Viola won the one-meter event with a score of 264.15 while coming in second in the three-meter event with a score of 269.70.

Prior to the meet, former UM swimming coach Bill Diaz was honored at the unveiling of a new scoreboard for the swimming and diving team in his name at UM’s Norman Whitten Student Union Pool.

UM will return to the water Friday, Nov. 9 when the team stays home to host in-state foe Florida Atlantic in a dual meet at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool.
