Oct. 27, 2007
Coral Gables, Fla. – The No. 25 University of Miami women’s soccer team played to a double-overtime 1-1 draw versus Clemson on Senior Night at Cobb Stadium on Saturday evening. It also marked the first annual Jenna Johnson Alumni Gathering, for which the Hurricanes welcomed back former UM women’s soccer players.
With the tie, Miami is now 9-4-4 overall and 4-2-2 in the ACC, moving into a tie with Wake Forest for fourth place in the league, while Clemson – who played in their seventh overtime game in its last eight outings – moved to 8-3-5 on the season and 1-2-5 in league play, tying Boston College for seventh place in the ACC.
Prior to the game, the Hurricanes honored their six seniors – Lindsay Curtin (Fairfax, Va.), Jessica Gillman (Dallas, Texas), Jenna Levenson (Boca Raton, Fla.), Lauren McAdam (Simsbury, Conn.), Akilah Moore (Evanston, Ill.) and Sheuneen Ta (London, England).
“These seniors are just incredible,” said Miami head coach Tricia Taliaferro. “They have good character, are hard working and have really helped to mold the younger players into what we are trying to establish here at Miami. They are truly going to be missed and have made such a great impact with our growth this year.”
Clemson took control early in the opening half, needing just eight minutes to get on the scoreboard as Nuria Zufia took a cross from Molly Franklin and fired it into the goal to put the Tigers up 1-0.
In the 30th minute, Miami freshman Brittney Steinbruch (Wyckoff, N.J.) threatened the Tiger defense, sending a shot just wide left of the goal, resulting in corner kick for the `Canes. Sophomore Jessica Wyble (Potomac, Md.) put the ball in play, and a header by freshman Brittney Macdonald (Littleton, Colo.) sailed over Moore and was grabbed by Clemson goalkeeper Ashley Phillips, who had four saves in the half.
Miami came out determined in the second half and put together several strong scoring opportunities. In the 78th minute, Wyble fired a shot from 30 yards out that just missed her target, ricocheting off the center of the crossbar and resulting in a corner kick for the `Canes.
UM had four straight corner kicks in under a minute. With the fourth corner, Wyble sent in a cross that was headed in by sophomore Beverly Goebel (Moreno Valley, Calif./Sacramento State) for the equalizer in the 84th minute.
Goebel nearly scored the game winner with just over a minute remaining in regulation, as she took a cross from Moore and sent a shot just wide left of the goal.
The Hurricanes were strong throughout both overtime periods – taking four shots, while limiting the Tigers to just one. For the game, Miami out-shot Clemson 18-15 and had the 11-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Philips finished with 10 saves for the Tigers, while Miami’s McAdam grabbed seven in 110 minutes of work.
The Hurricanes return to the road for the final two games of the regular season – traveling to Duke for an 8 p.m. match on Thurs., Nov. 1, and then heading to Wake Forest for a 1 p.m. start on Sun., Nov. 4.
